Have the gods fallen on their heads? The gods or men; the everyday citizen or the politician who has taken the place of the Son of Heaven? In a country like China, where principles of harmony between the celestial universe and life on earth, between yin and yang, thought and action, still predominate, the policy of forced urbanisation – reinforced by prodigious fi nancial growth – has caused an unprecedented loss of historical and cultural points of reference.
